NEW YORK – A group of seven Texas legislators visited the Latino woman sentenced to death in prison, Melissa Lucio, whose execution is scheduled for the next 27 of April and prayed with her to “help avoid an irreversible injustice”, given that her case has been riddled with irregularities.
As Lucio’s representatives reported this Thursday, the American of Mexican origin received a visit on Wednesday from, among others, Republican Jeff Leach and Democrat Joe Moody, who are part of a group of more than 80 members of the House of Representatives of Texas who recently signed a letter to the Governor of the State asking that the execution be stayed.
“We are citizens of humanity inspired by urgent action to try to avoid an irreversible injustice”, said little d on the networks After the visit, legislator Victoria Neave Criado, another of the congresswomen who went to the Mountain View prison, in the Texas town of Gatesville, where Lucio is located.
This mother of 14 children became 2008 the first Latina to be sentenced to death in the state of Texas. She is accused of beating her two-year-old daughter, Mariah, to death, although she assures that the girl died as a result of an accident, after falling down a long and steep staircase.
Before his imminent execution, Lucio has received the support of numerous organizations, including “Project Innocence”, which has helped in the presentation of a petition for clemency that includes the opinion of seven experts in forensic medicine who point out that the girl’s injuries p could have been due to this accident.
In addition, four members of the jury that sentenced Lucio to death now assure that, if they had known during the trial some of the details that have been known later, would not have opted for that sentence, and have requested that a new judicial process be held.
These two circumstances, according to Lucio’s legal team, mean that this death sentence is an injustice.
The case of Melilla Lucio has received the attention and support of the American star Kim Kardashian, who has previously requested the pardon of other prisoners with highly disputed sentences, achieving in some cases its review.
