The implementation of new data transmission technologies such as 5G have allowed millions of people to enjoy much faster Internet connections than those that existed until a few years ago.

This technology offers maximum download quotas of up to 10Gbps with extremely low latencies of about 1 millisecond. This means that a person on a 5G network can download a movie in 4K quality in less than 1 minute.

Taking into account that talk is already beginning of how the technological leap that the arrival of 6G would imply could come to be, the question arises: How fast can the internet get?.

Currently the record for the highest data transmission speed is 319 Terabits per second (Tb/s), figure that was reached by Japanese scientists in July 2021 under ideal conditions carried out in a laboratory.

Although it is unlikely that consumers will be able to experience these speeds in the short or medium term, since adjustments to the fiber optic cables that transport the data would need to be made, this should come to fruition at some point

Experts point out that theoretically there could come a point where the speed of the Internet can equal the speed of light, so this would be the maximum data transmission speed that human beings could reach.

However, they clarify that this is only a hypothetical scenario since the current technology is still in full development .

Optoelectronics

Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics recently published the results of an investigation that made about the maximum speed that optoelectronic devices can offer, whose operation is directly related to light.

According to their calculations, the data transmission speed limit of optoelectronic devices is 1 million Gigahertz. They consider that even reaching that speed may be impossible because it would mean breaking the laws of quantum mechanics, something impossible to achieve.

This shows that although there is a Internet speed limit to which we can aspire, we are still very far from it.
