Disney plans to build a new affordable housing development in an area of 80 acres of land that is located near Flamingo Crossings Town Center and the Magic Kingdom theme parks in Orlando, Florida.
According to available information, the project will include more than 1,800 homes.
“We are committed in working together with our community to solve complex problems,” Walt Disney World Resort President Jeff Vahle said in a statement.
Vahle pointed out that the lack of affordable housing is affecting many people across the country, including in central Florida.
The company said the new Disney development is still in the prime following planning stages and must comply with the corresponding approvals.
“We plan to work with a developer to bring this initiative to life, using creativity and the innovation Disney is known for,” Vahle said.
In Orange County and the rest of Florida, Housing costs have increased substantially in recent years.
Only rents in Orlando increased by 24.26% year over year, based on a Florida Atlantic University study published in March.
Flashes with the governor of Florida complicate project
The announcement of the project for the construction of affordable houses is given after a friction between Disney CEO Bob Chapek and Governor of and Florida, Ron DeSantis.
The disagreement has its origin because Disney showed its rejection of the project Of law 1557 of the state House of Representatives, called by critics “Don’t say gay”, which restricts the teaching of sexual orientation or gender identity.
In reaction, DeSantis hinted that he might repeal a law of 55 years allowing Disney to govern itself on the grounds of Walt Disney World.
It is not yet clear if that potential repeal or an eventual larger dispute could affect Disney’s plans for the development of affordable housing.
Disney’s announcement also comes about two weeks after ue Universal Parks & Resorts and Wendover Housing Partners will announce that they plan to build 1,000 affordable housing units in 20 acres of land in Orlando .
