Ignorance can have fatal consequences

More than two years have passed since the coronavirus pandemic was officially declared and although half of the world’s population has already been vaccinated, some people like Karima Viquez are still reluctant to be inoculated.

“Do you know what the vaccines contain?”, he said entry the female resident of Boyle Heights. “Well, they contain rat urine and feces, as well as snake venom!”

And how did you know that it contained the vaccine?

“A friend who is a scientist told me… I don’t tell her her name because she’s afraid they’ll kill her for telling the truth.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) , the ingredients of the vaccine against COVID-19 vary according to the manufacturer.

“None of the vaccines contain eggs, latex or preservatives,” the CDC indicates on its official platform. “Vaccines against COVID-19 do not contain metals such as iron, nickel, cobalt, lithium or rare earth alloys.”

They also do not contain manufactured products such as microelectronics, electrodes, carbon nanotubes or nanowire semiconductors, much less faeces.

Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines contain polyethylene glycol (PEG), a main ingredient in osmotic laxatives and oral bowel preparations for colonoscopy procedures; In addition, it is an inactive ingredient or excipient in many medications.

Other ingredients of specific content in vaccines are: sucrose, tromethamine, tromethamine hydrochloride, sodium chloride , potassium chloride, acetic acid and sodium acetate, among other elements.

“There have definitely been many myths surrounding the vaccine, and given the fact of how they have been formed and how they come to work in people’s minds. We have to open the conversation to eradicate those ideas”, said Dr. Ilan Shapiro, Altamed’s medical affairs representative.

“We have already vaccinated half of the population of the world and the number of deaths and what is said it does not reflect reality”.

In fact, reality is shown by data from Johns Hopkins University that at 19 of March indicate that more than 10 have been applied,761 millions of vaccines in the world, the number of infections is 471, 471,612 and thanks to the vaccine, the vast majority of infected people have saved their lives.

The “wrong” remedies

“To tell you the simple truth, this vaccine is useless”, insisted Karima. “They just use you as a porcupine [conejillo de indias]”.

And where did you get that information from?, the interviewee was questioned.

“I have some uncles in Guadalajara who are doctors and they recommended that I not get vaccinated. They told me to take Aderogyl, pill or liquid, to prevent any cold. They also told me to buy Scott’s emulsion, which is a multivitamin so that the virus does not enter your body”.

Although Scott’s emulsion has other purposes medicinal products that range from helping people who suffer from psoriasis -a dermatological problem-, to the prevention of heart attacks, due to Omega 3 that helps the circulatory system to function properly, its use against COVID-19 has not been verified in clinical studies.

What it is true, it is that, in excess it can be harmful. Excessive consumption of this supplement could cause hypervitaminosis if it accumulates in the liver.

“The important thing is that we have conversations of this nature so that the myths are resolved,” said Dr. Shapiro. “Ignorance can lead us completely to death; therefore, with so many myths and lies, communication is important”.
