The “El Turi” prison in the province of Azuay, in Ecuador, experienced moments of high tension, after the riot promoted by inmates. At least 12 of them died.
According to the Minister of Government, Patricio Carrillo, “Until the moment they have been identified on the outside 00 victims and the internal parts are still working and making an evaluation”.
The official attributed the confrontations in the penitentiary center to the fact that “ there is an organization that wants to have absolute power inside the center and there are some cells that have rebelled against them”.
The revolt in the Cuenca prison forced the mobilization of 800 police and military to regain control of the prison, where no escape has been reported so far.
Due to the risk which implied for the internal population , authorities decided to evacuate 90 inmates, 10 of them with injuries that were treated by personnel from the Ministry of Health.
For her part, the Secretary of Human Rights, Bernarda Ordóñez, pointed out that they have moved specialized teams to the area to care for the relatives of the inmates.
In the same way, as soon as the corpses are evacuated, they will adopt the corresponding protocols to deliver the bodies to their relatives.
According to a specialist in the South American country, this revolt is part of the prison crisis that Ecuador has been experiencing since last year, when died 316 prisoners in violent clashes between rival gangs who dispute the control of penitentiary centers.
In the same “El Turi” prison, located on the outskirts of the city of Cuenca, capital of Azuay, they were massacred 33 imprisoned on 23 February 2021, most of them decapitated and dismembered in an attack between rival gangs coordinated simultaneously in several prisons that he left 78 deceased throughout the country.
