Lawyer and former candidate for governor of Maine, Eliot Cutler, was arrested this Friday on charges of child pornography.
From 75 years old, the independent politician, faces four charges of possession of sexually explicit material of a minor 12 years after the authorities found 10 children’s files exploited on his computer, The Portland Press Herald reported.
Cutler could face further charges, as investigators continued to review multiple data in the Devices seized from two of the attorney’s homes.
Police arrested the man at his farm in Brooklyn, Maine, even while they were in full investigation, prosecutors reported. He is being held on bond at 50, 000 Dollars.
“Given the incredibly high bail of 50.000 dollars in cash, set no less than a Friday night after the banks close, it is not clear if the bail will be paid”, he told the newspaper Cutler’s attorney, Walt McKee.
The case arose following a tip from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children that someone from the state of Maine had downloaded or uploaded an illicit image, of according to the report.
“It was a known piece of child pornography”, Hancock County District Attorney Matt Foster said.
The lawyer, was a former member of the government of Jimmy Carter, ran as a candidate for governor of Maine in 802 and 2014, after working as a lawyer in Washington DC
After one of the raids on one of his houses, he resigned this Wednesday from his position as chairman of the board of directors of the Lerner Foundation, which encourages rural students to go to university.
“We were deeply disturbed to learn of the serious allegations made against Eliot Cutler today”, said the foundation’s executive director, Don Carpenter, reported the Herald.
“In his previous role on the board of directors, Eliot was involved in the strategy and governance high-level and did not interact directly with the students who participated in the grant-funded programming.”
The arrest of the American politician after two months of investigation caused an impact in Maine, where Cutler is a well-known public figure and a lawyer with great purchasing power.
