Three men have been charged in the murder of Kevin Nishita, a security guard who was shot to death in November 2021.

The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged Shadihia Mitchell, Hershel Kiante Hale and Laron Gilbert for murder, attempted robbery and battery. All three men have offenses of varying degrees on their police records.

In the class action charges include a shooting, assault on a peace officer or firefighter, possession of firearms, and theft of a car. Le Ronne L. Armstrong, chief of the Oakland police reported that Gilbert is a fugitive from justice.

A few months ago Gilbert was arrested for an unrelated parole violation, but was released. The police reported at the time that there was not enough evidence to charge Gilbert with Nishita’s murder.

Prosecutors say Mitchell is the likely shooter who shot Nishita while protecting a KRON 4 reporter in downtown Oakland the day 24 November of last year.

Two of the three defendants were arrested in December, one of whom was the owner of the alleged getaway car in the case, KTVU reported.

Furthermore, authorities said they believe the three suspects are gang related from San Francisco.

The victim worked as an officer in San José, Hayward, Colma and for the Authority Oakland Housing. After retiring, he worked as a private security guard for local news crews, which have recently been the target of several armed robberies.
