The United States Senate passed a resolution calling for an investigation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and to the Russian Armed Forces for possible war crimes in Ukraine.

The resolution does not have the same force as a law, although it serves to support the investigations that the Prosecutor’s Office of the International Criminal Court (ICC) has initiated at the request of some 40 countries.

The text of the resolution approved by the Senate condemns “ war crimes, crimes against humanity and the systematic violation of human rights being committed by the Armed Forces Russian navies and military commanders, at the direction of President Vladimir Putin“.

Furthermore, it expresses the support of the Senate for any investigation of war crimes or crimes against humanity carried out against Putin, his Government or the Russian Armed Forces.

The resolution was promoted by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who earlier this month said in a TV interview that the only way to end the war in Ukraine was for someone in Russia to “get rid of” Putin.

The White House had to respond by saying that assassinating foreign leaders is not part of US policy.

Lindsey Graham, a controversial senator

Last March 3 or, Lindsey Graham sparked controversy after calling for the assassination of Russian President Vladimir Putin, however, she retracted her comments after they sparked outrage from prominent Republicans and foreign policy and legal experts.

On that occasion, Graham posted a video of Russian forces bombing Europe’s largest nuclear power plant to invoke the names of two notorious historical killers and suggest that a member of the circle Putin’s intimate emulates them.
