37 years ago the first '.com' domain was registered on the Internet

The era of the internet was not born from one day to the next, even the power that it was going to have on the population was not thought of.

The first domain name was “symbols.com“, created on 15 March 1985 by the computer company of Massachusetts Symbolics Inc. registered through the DNS (Domain Name System) process.

In At that time, the Internet was a non-commercial medium used more for military and academic purposes. Over the years , the World Wide Web (www.) and web browsers allowed almost everything to have a .com address.

Five other companies registered a domain name in that same year and they were: bbn.com, think.com, mcc.com, dec.com and northrop.com.

Other computer companies registered their domains over the years, such as: IBM, Sun, Intel, AMD, Apple, Cisco Systems and Microsoft.

Over 362 millions of domain names, of which more than 137 millions are .com extensions. exist today.

On 2009, symbolics.com was sold to XF.com, a domain aggregation company.

Today the domain name now hosts “The Big Internet Museum”.
