Pfizer announced that it will not cut off the supply of medicines to Russia

Despite the economic blockade suffered by Russia for invading Ukraine, the pharmaceutical company Pfizer reported in a statement that it will continue to supply medicines to the aggressor country despite its open opposition to the military actions.

“Implement a voluntary pause in the flow of our medicines to Russia it would be a direct violation of our fundamental principle of putting patients first “, added Pfizer.

Stopping the delivery of medicines for terminal illnesses such as cancer or cardiovascular therapies, would result in “significant suffering for patients and a potential loss of life, particularly among children and the elderly,” the company continued.

Despite this stance, the company added that its business model in Russia will change to show its support for Ukraine.

“Pfizer supports the community unified global community of public, private and civil society sectors in opposition to the Russian war in Ukraine and the brutal situation it has created”.

Despite not joining the economic blockade against Russia, Pfizer reported that is donating all profits from its Russian subsidiary to causes that will support Ukrainians, effective immediately.

Pfizer has no manufacturing sites in Russia, but plans to stop all planned investments with local suppliers that “had the intention of developing manufacturing capacity in the country”, according to the pharmaceutical company.

The company also announced that it will stop in start new clinical trials in Russia and will halt recruitment efforts for ongoing clinical trials in the country.

Pfizer plans to work with regulators, including the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), “to transition all ongoing clinical trials to alternative sites outside of Russia.”

Meanwhile, Pfizer said that it still will provide necessary medications to patients who are already enrolled in clinical trials.

“These decisions align with our patient-first values ​​and ensure that every dollar of profit derived from Russia will strengthen Ukraine and its people as they continue to courageously defend their nation and their freedom from this unprovoked and unwarranted attack,” Pfizer continued.
