Florida Dunkin' Employee Who Killed Customer Over Racist Slur Sentenced to House Arrest

A young man will have to serve two years of house arrest after fatally beating a man who verbally assaulted him with racist insults while working as a Dunkin’ employee in the city of Tampa, in Florida.

Corey Pujols, aged 27 years old, was ordered by a Tampa judge to complete 200 hours of community service and attend an anger management course. According to court documents, the client, identified as Vonello Cook, aged 77 years old, of white race, he had stopped by the self-service to order coffee and had expressed his anger because they were not serving him correctly due to the audio problems.

The client started yelling about the poor service and the employees told Cook, who was a regular, to get out. However, he parked his car, entered in an aggressive manner and began to insult the employees, according to the prosecution’s accusation.

2021

Pujols asked a co-worker to call the police, which caused a heated argument between him and Cook. When Pujols, who is black, asked Cook to leave, police said the customer verbally assaulted him with racial slurs.

The Dunkin’ clerk went to the counter and told him He asked Cook not to insult him again, but he did, to which Pujols responded by punching him in the jaw. Cook fell and hit his head on the ground.

The man was taken to hospital and died three days later. The autopsy revealed that he had suffered a skull fracture and concussions.

Pujols had been initially charged with aggravated homicide after the incident. Prosecutors accepted a plea deal from Pujols, who agreed to plead guilty to the misdemeanor charge of felony assault.
