In addition to complying with tax obligations, during the tax season in the United States, taxpayers have the opportunity to apply for some financial aid with the corresponding declaration. Although many people can qualify for them, it is important to keep in mind that these aids or credits are intended for various types of needs and, therefore, are subject to certain criteria that define the eligibility of each person. Said eligibility, in turn, is determined by the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS), which is the federal agency in charge of tax collection and granting such benefits.

What help can I request from the IRS when I file my taxes?

With each return, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) evaluates all taxpayers who apply for financial aid or tax credits in the United States. The requirements and procedures to obtain such benefits are usually different from each other , due to the needs to which they respond . Also the associated amount that, normally, tends to vary depending on the family group or the dependents in charge of the taxpayer:

Among the main credits and financial aid granted by the IRS are :

1. Refund Recovery Credit: Only those who did not receive the third stimulus check or who received the full amount are eligible for this benefit. This criterion applies both to the return 2021 and to the tax year 2020. Those whose check was accidentally stolen or destroyed are also eligible. The application is carried out by filing the tax return as usual, but completing the worksheet related to this benefit. On some occasions, the IRS may require confirmation of non-payment through 800-919-3911 or by completing the Form 3911 (SP), Taxpayer return on refund.

two. Child tax credit: The eligibility criteria for this benefit include those parents with children under the age of 16 years old who have a valid Social Security Number (SSN) and who do not have sufficient resources. The IRS also requires that the applicant —and, therefore, their family group— have lived in one of the 50 states of the country or have filed a joint return with a spouse who lives in the country. To apply for this credit, eligible taxpayers only need to file their return, claiming said credit on it, and register their information in the tool Non-filers: Submit Your Information. The corresponding amounts range from $8, to $16,000, according to the case.

3. Tax credit for child or dependent care: aimed at those taxpayers who do not have sufficient resources to cover expenses for children or dependents in their care. During this year the benefit increased from a range between $3,000 and $6,000 until $8,000 and $16,000, amounts that may vary depending on the case of the applicant. To obtain it, eligible taxpayers must submit the Form 2441 with all the necessary supports that demonstrate the expenses associated with the person who is their position, which must be less than 13 years old.

4. Earned Income Tax Credit: directed to workers with moderate or low incomes who qualify, according to the criteria imposed by the IRS. During this year, this benefit received an improvement in cases of those workers who have dependents in their care, who are also eligible to receive an extension that goes from $536 to $1,502, additional amount that would be added to what is received for this credit (between $1, 502 and $6,728).
