The South African Nelson Mandela, who died in 2013 and was president of his country of 1994 to 1999, is remembered for the great legacy that he built, but also for his life full of sacrifices and injustices.

Before he became the first black president in South African history, ‘Madiba’, as he was also known, spent almost three decades in prison, being until 11 February 1990 who finally regained his freedom.

A couple of years after his return to Johannesburg, Mandela settled in the neighborhood of Houghton, where he lived for six years in a very nice mansion that, over time, would end up becoming a benchmark of the city and would see personalities of the stature of Bill Clinton, Michael Jackson, Oprah Winfrey

, among other.

The transformation of the house began in the year of 2013, when a group of investors injected her with a large sum of money to rescue her and return her brilliance that characterized it, because they feared it would end up in ruins and oblivion.

“What we are trying to do is make it a sustainable place, that can stay long term. We’re not taking advantage of her legacy. The important thing for us is to demonstrate a new way to maintain a legacy. If we see what happened to Liliesleaf, which fell into ruins, what we want is to prevent that from happening,” said Dimitri Maritz, hotel manager, in an interview with the EFE news agency.

It was so, in September 2021, the house gave way to ‘Mandela Sanctuary’, a luxury boutique hotel in nine thematic rooms , which take us back to different periods of the life of the African leader.

“It is an experience, basically an opportunity to experience Mandela’s legacy, an opportunity for us to give shelter to that legacy and pass it on to a new generation”, said Maritz.

In addition to being a very attractive place for its rooms and its history, this hotel is also attractive for its restaurant, where some of Mandela’s favorite dishes are served, as well as its bar, its heated pool and its meeting rooms.

The cost per night is 4,000 to the 15,000 rands, something like $265 at $990 Dollars. The most expensive room is the ‘Presidential Suite’, which is the space where Mandela slept during his stay at the place.
