A new controversy continues about Canelo Álvarez’s career . Many question the status of “idol” of the Guadalajara. However, Marco Antonio Barrera came out in defense of Saúl Álvarez, but among his arguments he attacked Julio César Chávez.
Among the reasons that Barrera exposes are the obstacles and scandals that both boxers have gone through. The former Mexican fighter considers that the clean career of Saúl Álvarez is not something that catches the attention of boxing fans, unlike the noisy career of Julio César Chávez.
“(Canelo) is the opposite of what people celebrate. That we see him (Chavez) as an idol because he was a drug addict, because we see him as an idol because he beat people, that we see him as an idol because he went up drunk to fight”, stated Marco Antonio Barrera through an interview with Roberto Martínez.
Under these circumstances, the former Mexican boxer questions the way idols are forged . Barrera considers that the maximum idolatry should be the other way around: recognize Saúl Álvarez for a successful career inside the ring and a quiet life outside of it.
“ We must be upside down. Applaud Canelo who is an athlete 100 percent , he is a fighter who spends I don’t know how many months to prepare. He does a lot of social work, he is aware of many things. Why don’t we see him as an idol? Why do we refer to the worst?” , the former Aztec boxer asked himself.
