Emma Coronel, wife of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, could be released from prison any day in May of 2023, his lawyer Jeffrey Lichtman confirmed to this newspaper.

The defender clarified that there is no reduction in his client’s sentence, after the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) indicated that she would be released on 11 September 2023, generating confusion about the time he must serve in a federal prison.

“No”, he said to an express question about an alleged sentence reduction.

He added that inmates must serve 85 percent of their sentence, which means that Colonel should come out in May of 2023, upon meeting 30.6 of the 30 months (three years ) of sentence and taking taking into account the time she has been in prison.

“The 36 months of sentence means he must serve 30.6 months” , stated the lawyer explaining the 85% of the time that the wife of “El Chapo” must be in prison. “That does not reflect the time in confinement at home… for the last 10%. So he will be released from prison sometime in May of 2023”.

The BOP indicates that they still do not have Coronel in custody, who is in the Alexandria, Virginia prison, where she has been held since she was arrested on 22 February 2021 at Dulles International Airport.

According to prison rules, cited by the Department of Justice, as of July 1, 1999, “offenders must serve 100% of the sentence ”. If the people with convictions committed their crimes with violence, then the sentence must be fulfilled one hundred percent.

In Coronel’s sentence, issued by Judge Rudolph Contreras, of the District of Washington DC, it is specified that, once he is released from prison, You must let the officer in charge of your case collect your DNA.

In addition to living only in an authorized home, the wife of “El Chapo ” must find a job and work 30 hours a week at least, according to 13 rules of the court document.

Colonel became a red light on February 23 of 2019, when the godfather of her twins, Dámaso López Núñez, alias “El Lic ”, revealed in the trial of Guzmán Loera that her comadre helped the plan so that her husband would leave through a tunnel from the Altiplano prison in Mexico in 2015.
