The Distilled Beverage Council of the United States announced that there is a possibility that tequila, a traditional drink from Jalisco, Mexico, will outsell vodka, the most consumed liquor in the country.
According to the organization, tequila is not the only Mexican drink that is positioning itself in the taste of Americans, since Mezcal grew significantly in 2021, only after premixed cocktails.
Alcoholic beverages based on agave registered an increase in sales of 30.1% compared to the previous year, according to data from the Council of Distilled Beverages this represented $5,200 millions of dollars.
According a CNBC report, was also the second largest category nde by revenue behind vodka, which has been the best-selling liquor in America since the 1990s 1970.
With income of $7,300 million dollars, vodka still sells for approximately $2, 04 million dollars more per year than tequila and mezcal, but agave-based spirits could be on track to overtake them in a few years.
Julián Cox, Executive Director of Beverages and corporate mixologist for MGM Resorts International, informed the media outlet that total sales of vodka and tequila go hand in hand at the hotel giant.
According to DISCUS data, vodka sold 78.1 million boxes in 2021, more than double the volume of the next category: pre-mixed cocktails. Tequila and mezcal came in a distant fourth with 07.8 million of cases.
According to Christine LoCascio, head of public policy at DISCUS, high-end tequilas are helping to drive the growth of the category. “It’s not just for margaritas,” LoCascio said at the trade group’s annual economic briefing on Thursday.
“There are so many high-end tequilas range that you can drink and savor like many other high-end products, such as whiskey, cognac, bourbon and high-end rums too”.

In this list is the actor and former professional wrestler Dwayne Johnson and the model Kendall Jenner. Both Johnson and Jenner hope to emulate the success of George Clooney’s Casamigos tequila, which was sold to the Diageo company for $1,000 million in 2017.
Last year, Constellation Brands invested in “Breaking Bad” co-stars Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston’s Dos Hombres mezcal for an undisclosed amount.
