The Bicentennial Agreement, the new security plan with a comprehensive approach between Mexico and the United States, will contain a total of 101 Actions, Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard reported on Monday during the launch of the action plan.

“What What we do today is to publicize an action plan that is the result of several months’ work, because we said that it was not enough to publicize general objectives but to have a joint action plan that, from my point of view, had not been previously”, Ebrard pointed out.

He stressed that between the two nations there is an “atmosphere of reciprocity and mutual respect” and from now on both delegations will meet to analyze the results of the 101 actions that make up the plan, and thus share them with the public.

He stressed that the Bicentennial Understanding has three main objectives: to protect citizens, prevent cross-border crimes and prosecute criminal networks.

For his part, the United States ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, assured that it is the first time in 200 years that both countries face challenges and opportunities in federal security issues.

“It is not that it is only the United States or only Mexico, but to work together”, he pointed out.

He assured that on the subject, both countries are entering a “new era”.

However, he stressed that the work must be done jointly and respecting the sovereignty of both countries. And he reiterated that the Bicentennial Understanding is not only about a plan that is going to be forgotten.

“This is a plan that is accompanied by a set of lines of action” and is mainly related to the violence on both borders, he pointed out.

between the two countries that has allowed the construction of “a solid security mechanism” between the two nations.

The Bicentennial Understanding, also called the United States-Mexico Bicentennial Framework for security, public health, and safe communities, is a new strategy that It seeks to contemplate the “root causes” of violence, addressing both cross-border crime and drug use with a “public health” approach or promoting the strengthening of Justice, among other points.

It entered into force as of this year to replace the Merida Initiative established in 2007 during the Government of President Felipe Calderón (2006-2012).
