Sony announced this Monday the purchase of Bungie, the developer of Destiny, one of the most successful multiplayer video games of recent years.

According to information published by the GamesIndustry portal, the operation was closed for a total of $3,600 million. Information indicates that Bungie will become an independent subsidiary of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) and that its leadership and decision-making will be in charge of its current CEO and president, Pete Parsons, as well as the rest of the board of directors.

Jim Ryan, CEO and president of SIE, explained in an official publication that they expect Bungie to work together with the developers of PlayStation Studios, however, at the same time they will remain as a studio that will work on the creation of multiplatform games.

“First of all I want to make it very clear to the community that Bungie will continue to be an independent, cross-platform publisher and studio. As such, we think it makes sense for him to sit alongside the PlayStation Studios organization, and we’re incredibly excited about the opportunities for synergies and collaboration between these two world-class groups,” Ryan said in the letter posted on the PlayStation website. .

The executive indicated that Sony will provide all the necessary support so that Bungie can continue growing and creating “incredible worlds capable of captivating millions of people”.

He argued that the purchase of the developer will allow Sony to expand its PlayStation services to millions of new users around the world

.

“Bungie makes games with exceptional technology that are tremendously fun to play. They also have an unmatched dedication to the communities that play their games, and everyone at PlayStation and PlayStation Studios will be excited about what we can share and learn from them,” added PlayStation Studios Head Hermen Hulst.

For his part, Pete Parsons commented that the reason he accepted Sony’s proposal was that they were offered the possibility of continuing to create innovative games that are remembered for generations, without compromising their creative independence.

Sony’s announcement occurs one week after Microsoft, its main competitor, announced that it had reached an agreement with Activision to buy the company and become the owner of its entire catalog of video games. This business movement allowed Xbox to acquire franchises such as Call of Duty and World of Warcraft.

It also allowed Microsoft to become the third largest video game developer in the world.
