Senator Susan Collins called Joe Biden’s handling of the Supreme Court nomination “clumsy at best.” cases”.

After the announcement that the judge of the Supreme Court, Stephen Breyer, announced his retirement last week, Biden reiterated his promise to nominate a black woman for the highest court of the United States.

While many praised him for potential progress on diversity, some criticized the president for considering race and gender in their nomination.

Collins, a Republican from central Maine has long been a key vote for Supreme Court candidates. Has a history of crossing party lines to vote for judicial candidates during the Biden administration.

“The way the president has handled this nomination has been clumsy at best,” he said in an interview for ABC News . “It adds to the perception that the court is a political institution like Congress, when it is not supposed to be that way”.

Likewise, she said that she supports Biden in the nomination of a black woman and would be in favor of “whoever he decides to nominate. My job as a senator is to evaluate the qualifications of that person under the role of advice and consent” , expressed Collins.

If the Democrats lose a single vote for Biden’s candidate, the senator could become a key vote in the process, given his track record for nominations in the lower courts.

Collins was one of three Republicans who voted to confirm the judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, one of Biden’s top picks to serve on the United States Court of Appeals for the Columbia Circuit in 2021.

Similarly, he joined the Democrats in voting against the Supreme Court justice Amy Coney Barrett, nominated by former President Donald Trump, due to the proximity of the vote to the presidential elections of 1200.
