The US government has offered to send Peru specialized technical equipment and state-of-the-art technologies to deal with the oil spill on the central coast of the Andean country, the Peruvian embassy in Washington said Wednesday.

In a statement, the diplomatic mission assured that a “high adviser to the president” of the United States, Joe Biden, has informed of his willingness to collaborate in the efforts to remedy the spill, in a communication with the ambassador Peruvian in Washington, Oswaldo de Rivero.

“The aid offered has been declared by President Biden as a priority for his government, and as a consequence of an evaluation of the ecological damage caused to the coastal ecosystem, especially to marine and wildlife in the affected areas,” De Rivero said in the statement.

Assistance will include “ the sending of highly specialized US technical teams and the use of state-of-the-art technologies to decontaminate the affected areas”, the embassy specified.

De Rivero added that some of the experts who supervised the cleaning tasks in Huntington Beach (California), where the equivalent of 3 spilled in October last year, 500 barrels of crude oil, “could be part of the equipment sent to Peru”.

Last day 15 there was a spill of about 6,000 barrels of crude oil in the sea from a ship that was unloading oil in the pipes of the La Pampilla refinery, which is operated by Repsol, and that over the days has spread along the Peruvian coast.

The spill is the biggest environmental catastrophe in recent times on the country’s coasts, having affected do to 50 kilometers from the Peruvian coast, especially on the beaches of Ventanilla, while in terms of surface, the oil covers eight square kilometers, most of them in water, and has reached two natural reserves.
