Child under 15 months became the youngest COVID victim in Los Angeles County

A minor of 15 months this Wednesday became the youngest victim to die from COVID in the County of Los Angeles so far in the pandemic.

The Department of County Public Health said that the death of the infant is a stark reminder that the coronavirus can affect anyone .

This Wednesday was the second anniversary of the first confirmed case of COVID in Los Angeles County, where they were reported 19,694 new infections and 91 people killed by the illness.

The health authorities as and county schools have implemented various safety measures in an effort to protect school children and are resulting in fewer cases of coronavirus among students and school staff.

In the week ending 16 January, schools practiced 555 ,879 COVID tests, with 54,694 positive cases, so the positivity rate was 7.8%, a decrease of 28% with respect to the previous week when there was a rate of %.

Most tests, near the 70% of them, were practical Los Angeles Unified School District.

Despite the decrease in cases, the Department of Public Health indicated that the number of coronavirus infections in schools has increased , largely due to the Omicron variant, which is highly transmissible .

The county reported that between 16 Y 22 of January were opened 11 reports on school infections of COVID, 9 in elementary schools, 1 in a high school and 1 more in youth sports.

“The numbers are still relatively low given the large number of new cases and suggest that schools continue to successfully implement public health measures that reduce spread,” the county said.

“Although Omicron causes milder illness, we are still seeing serious illness and death, and we don’t know the long-term consequences of asymptomatic illness or mild illness,” said Orange County Deputy Health Director Dr. Regina Chinisio .
