Aston Villa announced the arrival of Lucas Digne to the Premier League team after his controversial departure from Rafa Benítez’s Everton where he did not play recently due to an alleged argument with the Spanish coach.
Villa has prevailed in negotiations with clubs like Newcastle United and Chelsea and has acquired the services of Digne for 27 millions of euros. This is Villa’s second signing in the winter market, after signing Philippe Coutinho, from Barcelona, on loan until the end of the season.
Digne is leaving the team, despite the fact that he still had three and a half years left on his contract with Everton, and he sent a loving message to the fans of the Toffees and with a certain hardness towards someone specific from the club.
“Everything has to have an end. I didn’t expect it to be this way. What has happened and some things that have been said about me in the last month have left me very sad. I will always carry Everton in my heart. Sometimes it only takes one person to destroy a beautiful love story”, explained the Frenchman.
“It has been a pleasure and an honor to have played for you, the people, the fans, because the club does not belong to any footballer or coach, but to the fans. I will always carry them in my heart”, the Frenchman wrote on social networks along with a photo with the Liverpool club shirt.
Steven Gerrard, Aston Villa coach, was happy for the signing the Frenchman and what his arrival at the club means and helping them to enter European qualifying positions.
“When Lucas became available, we took the opportunity to bring him to the club . Signing a player of his quality in the January window is a great addition to our team and his arrival is exciting for me and everyone associated with Aston Villa”, said Gerrard.
