Senator Alex Padilla , Democrat by California , became the first Latino to represent the golden state when Kamala Harris took over as Vice President. The son of Mexican immigrants will now also be the first Hispanic to head the Senate’s Immigration Subcommittee .

I promise to bring the urgency to the immigration reform that this moment demands and that millions of migrant workers have won, “the Democrat advanced in the same statement.
Padilla was willing to work alongside his fellow Democrats and Republicans “to restore dignity and humanity in our immigration policies and respectfully defend the legacy of the United States as a nation of immigrants. ”
The senator’s office indicated that“ as a sign of his commitment ”Padilla changed the name of the subcommittee that was previously Border Security and Immigration to Immigration, Citizenship, and Border Security.

The Californian intends to bring a new vision to the subcommittee “as the first Latino senator for California and as the first Latino to preside over it. ”
Their plans are to address the needs affecting migrant communities in California and across the country, with special emphasis on the essential workers who have been on the front lines to face the coronavirus pandemic.
These objectives range from reunifying families and fixing the asylum system to speeding up the legal immigration process and creating a path to citizenship for 11 Millions of undocumented immigrants estimated to live in the United States.
