Omicron Effect: California Health Officials Concerned About Increase in Pediatric Hospitalizations Nationwide

Officials from the California Department of Public Health expressed concern for the increase in children hospitalized for COVID – 19 nationwide, driven by the Omicron variant of the SARS CoV-2 virus .

Federal data indicate that about 2, minors in the United States remain hospitalized with confirmed and suspected cases of coronavirus, an increase in 700 pediatric hospitalized more compared to the previous month .

In California there is concern of an increase in pediatric hospitalizations similar to that reported in New York State.

“Unfortunately, New York is experiencing an increase in hospitalizations. pediatric ones (mainly among the unvaccinated) and have similar vaccination rates of 5 to 11 years. Please give your children the gift of vaccine protection as soon as possible, as our case numbers are growing rapidly, ”said California state epidemiologist Dr. Érica Pan on social media.

In New York City, child hospitalizations increased by 395% from the week ending on 10 December , going from 22 to 109 cases in the week ending 23 from December. Across New York State, they increased from 70 to 188 cases.

Ohio and Texas also reported more than 150 minors hospitalized for the coronavirus.

There are more and more children sick with COVID – 19 in California

Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center cares for more children with severe COVID disease – 19.

“Some children basically need oxygen, others have more difficulty breathing. Other children arrive dehydrated because they don’t eat or drink enough, ”said Dr. Peter Han, a pediatrician at the medical center.

The doctor indicated that a large number of them had not been vaccinated .

Until Monday, were reported 966 patients in Los Angeles hospitals , while the day before there were 904. Of them, 200 were in intensive care units, by 188 that were held on Sunday.

The seven-day average daily rate people who tested positive increased to 12. 4% from Monday , which is more than triple the Los Angeles County rate than the prior week.

The increase in infections is mainly due to Ómicron, which is highly transmissible.
