Mexico has so far 42 cases of the variant of the coronavirus Ómicron since the first patient was detected on December 3, this was announced by the Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López-Gatell.

“In Mexico we will occasionally comment on how omicron infections are advancing but we insist, it is the same epidemic. This posting that has been made of 32 cases that we recently announced, 32 that we have registered up to now, makes little sense because the epidemic is still the same ”, he pointed out.

In the morning conference of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the person in charge of the strategy against the pandemic in Mexico pointed out that “the Omicron variant is overestimated” and it is not ruled out that at “some point” it may arrive a fourth wave of infections to the country.

“The participation of the Omicron variant. As we have said since October, it is indisputable that at some point in Mexico, as has happened in other countries, there may be a fourth wave “, he mentioned.

” It is a variant (Ómicron) which is clearly more transmissible, but which produces less serious disease ”, he stated.

Cases of Ómicron will continue to appear as cases of Delta continue to appear to the extent that the epidemic continues to be active, as long as it continues to be active in any part of the world, it will probably also continue to be active in Mexico ”, he commented.

Hugo López- Gatell assured that thanks to the vaccination program implemented by the federal government, the coronavirus pandemic in Mexico has been falling , since the highest peak in the third wave of infections due to the Delta variant last July and August.

“We open the week still with a reduction in estimated cases, compared to the previous week, and in this case we open with -7%, term We will surely end the week with a reduction of at least -1% or -2% “, he said.

We could see a large number of cases, but a much lower proportion of hospitalizations than we have had in previous waves. For what reason? Mainly due to the effect of the vaccination ”, he stated.

From the National Palace, López -Gatell stated that there is only one hospital occupancy of 11% in intensive care beds and 13% in general, in addition to what is in the country 81. 9 million of people with at least one dose of COVID vaccine – 19, the 88% of the adult population, of which 72. 7 million have the complete scheme.
