Omicron Effect: More than 8,600 new infections reported by Los Angeles County on Christmas Eve

The wave of infections by COVID – 19 is at its peak in Los Angeles County when reporting this Thursday, 8, 633 new patients .

In 48 hours, the number of cases has multiplied, which has worried public health authorities that a record number of daily infections may be reached by the end of year.

All 8, 633 sick this Thursday represents an increase in 33% compared to 6, 509 infections that were notified on Wednesday ; while it is more than double the total of Tuesday, when there were 3, 052 cases.

The director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health , Barbara Ferrer, said that if the infections continue at this speed, the number of daily cases could exceed 20, 000 by the end of the year, which would be the highest level of the pandemic .

On Wednesday, Ferrer mentioned that hospitalization rates had remained relatively stable, which he attributes to COVID vaccines – 19 have helped prevent infected people from becoming seriously ill ; but this Thursday the number of hospitalized reached 801, which exceeded the 800 for the first time since early October .

The 801 hospitalized this Thursday increased from the 770 reported on Wednesday. 174 patients were in intensive care areas for 166 Wednesday.

Infections affect more unvaccinated residents

The authorities indicated that the majority of people hospitalized for coronavirus were unvaccinated residents .

Ferrer said that unvaccinated people are 5 times more likely to be infected by COVID – 19, in addition to 21 times more likely to be hospitalized and 18 times more likely to die.

The increase in infections is attributed to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant .

County authorities reported 24 new deaths related to the coronavirus.
