The state of Guanajuato lived a historic day, by becoming the number entity 26 in recognizing equal marriage in Mexico. Despite being one of the most conservative and traditionalist states in the country, from now on, government offices must recognize the union between two people, regardless gender.
The Civil Registry of the State of Guanajuato was the one in charge of making known that from this 18 December 2021 Couples from the LGBTTTI community who wish to marry in the State will no longer need to file amparos , so they can go to the civil registry and request the union like any other couple.
According to the official document, it is requested to materialize this right “without discrimination due to your sexual preference to marry in our offices of the Civil Registry, if so requested and without the need for any legal recourse for its origin”.
The Secretary of State Government, Libya Dennise García Muñoz Ledo, reported that equal marriage was approved to allow fundamental rights to be effectively realized and also achieve harmony between human rights norms with the constitutionality block.
The mayor of the capital, Alejandro Navarro, celebrated that Guanajuato joins the list of states that allow equal marriage. “Let’s keep moving!” He said.
Equal marriage has been one of the greatest demands of the LGBTTTI community to the Mexican authorities. In 2010, Mexico City was the pioneer in allowing same-sex marriage and since then, other states have continued with the reforms to the law.
Already without Guanajuato on the list, there are still six states where members of the LGBT + community need to file an amparo (trial) to get married: Durango, Tamaulipas, Guerrero, Veracruz, Tabasco and the State of Mexico.
