The rises in the price of homes in Florida have generated concerns in various sectors of society, since for many, acquiring an affordable property is practically impossible.

There are sectors that ask the Florida authorities to act especially in order to regulate and control the prices of real estate rentals. Even there are already Democratic representatives who have spoken out about it.

“More and more Florida is becoming unaffordable for Floridians due to these excessive increases. of rents, “wrote representative Carlos Guillermo Smith on Twitter.

The Democrat addressed a letter to the Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, asking him to declare the state a housing emergency and in response he received a criticism of government policy from a state spokeswoman Joe Biden’s Federal Against Covid – 19 and “lockdowns”.

Representative Smith denounced that there is “speculation” with the home prices of rent and recalled that in Florida there are state laws that protect consumers from such abuses. “It is time for us to use and apply them,” he stressed, according to EFE.

In his letter to the Republican governor to request actions against speculation with rental prices, Smith included the declaration of a state of emergency that would allow to stop the abuses of the owners.

If the declaration is approved, would open the door to a price control and could even freeze increases in rents for up to one year. The emergency declaration would make it possible to declare “speculation” any annual increase greater than 10%.

The increases in the real estate world in the state are putting thousands of families in a bind as they do not have affordable options even for rent or buy. This situation is causing the shortage of supply to skyrocket .

According to EFE, The Gap organization announced that in 2020 there was a shortage of 6.8 million affordable rent for low-income tenants income , those who are at the poverty line or below, this phenomenon occurred in cities such as Miami and Las Vegas.

The Gap noted that in Florida there are only 28 rental homes available for each 100, 000 extremely low-income individuals. Meanwhile, in Nevada the number is lower, 20 homes for each 100, 000 population.

According to the study, Texas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Oregon and Delaware also have problems when it comes to the availability of housing for low-income residents. The national average of housing vacancy in 2020 was 37 homes for each 80, 000 low-income tenants .
