The United States Government congratulated Gabriel Boric on his victory in the presidential elections in Chile and said that it hopes to continue working with the new Administration to promote the “shared objectives” of democracy, prosperity and security.
In a message on Twitter, the secretary of The US state, Antony Blinken, also assured that the Chilean people “once again set an example” with the holding of free and fair democratic elections .
Boric, a former student leader from 35 years, he prevailed this Sunday in the second round of the presidential elections by achieving the 55. 8% of the votes, with more than 10 percentage points of difference with respect to his rival, the far-right José Antonio Kast.
According to official data, Boric obtained broad support in the capital, where half of the voters are, and in other regions with large urban centers, such as Valparaíso, where it almost got 20 advantage points.
It would also have been imposed even in the northern region of Antofagasta, an area that was won in the first round by Franco Parisi, a controversial economist whose voters mostly supported Kast in the face of the ballot.
Among the main challenges of the future Government will be to channel the social crisis that continues to exist since the protests of 2019, lead the implementation of the norms of the new Constitution and face the economic challenges left by the pandemic.
