The inauguration came six months after the governor announced the plan to build the state’s border wall and authorized the transfer of $ 250 millions of dollars as a down payment.

Then, in September, a program director was chosen to lead the planning and construction of the border fence.

Abbott also signed House Bill 9 in November, which provides an additional $ 1.8 billion in state funding for border security, including building walls.

“In June, I promised the Texans that we would step up in the absence of the federal government and build our own border wall. We have wasted no time in the six months since that promise was made, and I am proud to announce that construction of the Texas Border Wall is underway, “Abbott said in a statement.

In addition to funding, Abbott has signed a handful of laws on border issues, including human trafficking and drug trafficking.

Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush was also at the construction site with Abbott on Saturday. Earlier this year, Bush issued an emergency authorization for the use of state land for the construction of the state border wall.

Friday Fox News reporter Bill Melugin tweeted that the first wall panels were erected in Starr County, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley. Melugin said the wall is the result of “state land, state money.”

Abbott retweeted Melugin’s comment, commenting: “Texas has officially begun building its own border wall. Biden allows open border policies and refuses to enforce laws passed by Congress to secure the border and enforce immigration laws. Texas is preparing to do the work of the federal government. ”

Also on Friday, Abbott appeared on “Varney & Co. ” from Fox News. to discuss the construction of the border wall.

During the interview, Abbott said the Texas Legislature “really took a tough stand” to make sure that the state had enough money to build a wall and make sure the Texas National Guard and the Texas Department of Public Safety are on the border.
