Dozens of people are feared to have died in a fire that tore through an eight-story building in Osaka, Japan , which houses an internal medicine clinic, authorities said Friday.
The Osaka Police is investigating whether the building fire located in the commercial and entertainment area of Kitashinchi, was provoked , as witnesses saw a man carrying a paper bag leaking an unidentified liquid , according to media reports.
The authorities were looking for the possible suspect, but it was not reported of no immediate arrest.
The Osaka City Fire Department official Akira Kishimoto said that 27 people were transferred to nearby hospitals due to cardiac arrest .
Nine of them were declared dead
It is believed Many of the victims are visitors to the fourth-floor clinic, fire department officials said.
The building also houses other companies, including an English school.
Approximately 70 fire trucks responded to the fire that was extinguished in about 30 minutes, authorities said.
The fire started on the fourth floor of a building in eight floors in the shopping and entertainment area, a fire department official said.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known, as that Osaka police said they were investigating a possible fire or accident.
NHK quoted a witness who said he heard a woman’s voice coming from the fourth floor, while another witness told TV Asahi that he saw orange flames coming out of the windows.
