Obama publishes list of his favorite films of 2021

The former president of the United States Barack Obama (2009 – 2017) published this Thursday a list of his favorite films of the year, among which the musical about Hispanic immigration “West Side Story” stands out.

For some time now, the ex-president has been publishing lists with cultural recommendations, both for literature and for film and music, which have become a year-end tradition for well received which are usually his choices.

Among his favorite films of 2021 includes the new adaptation of “West Side Story”, directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by Rita Moreno, in which half the cast is Latino and a large part of the dialogue is in Spanish.

There are no more Hispanic films among the recommendations of Obama, who has looked at films by others countries such as the Japanese “Drive My Car”, based on a story by Haruki Murakami, or the Norwegian “The Worst Person in the World”.

The rest of the list includes the documentary “Summer of Soul”, which recalls the African American culture festival held in New York during the summer of 1969; the drama “Passing”, about racial segregation; and “Judas and the Black Messiah”, which recalls the murder of one of the leaders of the Black Panthers.

The favorite for the Oscars ” The Power of the Dog “,” Pig “,” The Card Counter “,” Old Henry “,” The Last Duel “,” The Tragedy of Macbeth “,” C’Mon C’Mon “and” Quo Vadis, Aida ” complete the selection.

Obama also chose his favorite books of the year – including “Beautiful Country” by Qian Julie Wang and ” Harlem Shuffle ”, by Colson Whitehead, and promised to publish his list of songs in the coming days, which in other years included artists such as Rosalía and J Balvin.
