The United States Government offered this Wednesday five million dollars in reward for the capture of the children of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.
The State Department issued a statement informing of this reward for those who collaborate with information that leads to the arrest or conviction of the four sons of the capo, a former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, Ovidio Guzmán López, Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar, Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar and Joaquín Guzmán López. The reward applies to each of those indicated.
“All four are high-ranking members of the Sinaloa Cartel and each is subject to federal indictment for their involvement in illicit drug trafficking,” said the State Department.
Additionally, the Treasury Department announced sanctions against drug trafficking organizations known as Los Rojos and Guerreros Unidos, ordering the freezing of assets under US jurisdiction and prohibits making transactions with them.
The sanctions announced by the Office of Foreign Assets of the Department of the Treasury are b roasted in a new executive order that broadens the universe that the United States Government can use to sanction people involved in drug trafficking, not necessarily connected to a transnational cartel.
“ Los Rojos are a splinter group from the Beltrán Leyva organization (BLO, in English), which in recent years has become one of the most powerful criminal organizations in Mexico. In addition to generating violence in Mexico, the Los Rojos drug trafficking organization is responsible for the trafficking of numerous illicit drugs, including heroin, into the United States, ”said the Treasury in a statement.
“Guerreros Unidos (…) was originally a splinter group from the BLO and, through violence, expanded its role in the heroin trade. Guerreros Unidos collaborates with the Mexican drug trafficking organization, the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel, and shares the same transportation networks to move drug shipments to the United States and return drug proceeds to Mexico, ”added the agency.
The new executive order announced today by the White House is called “Authority to Punish Foreigners in Global Illicit Drug Trafficking”, and was released to sanction to the two Mexican groups as well as to other 10 individuals and 13 organizations from three other countries.
This new authority to sanction people involved in drug trafficking complements other previously implemented authorities such as the Law to Appoint Drug Traffickers (Kingpin Act) of 1999 and another executive order promoted by former President Bill Clinton in 1995 with the same purpose.
