The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released on Friday its much anticipated updated guide to help school leaders decide how to get students safely to classrooms or keep them there.

Instead of a political push for reopen schools , update is a measured and data-driven effort to expand on previous recommendations and advise to school leaders on how to “overlap” the most effective safety precautions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus : mandatory use of masks, physical distancing, hand washing, ventilation and cleaning of buildings, and contact tracing in case of detecting positive to COVID – 19 .

This roadmap, according to the CDC, will open the way for 19 millions of students in the public schools of the country return to class with maximum security levels.

“Our goal is for children to return to school. The school must be one of the last places to be closed and the first to open, ”the CDC director said at a press conference, Rochelle Walensky.

However, she recalled that the guide to reopen schools issued this Friday by the centers he directs is “a recommendation, not an obligation.”

“Our goal is to make sure that children go back to school and We do it both for the safety of the children and the teachers ”, added Walensky.

On the other hand, the director explained that although reopening should not be subject to for teachers to be vaccinated, it is “important” that states give priority to teachers and school personnel in vaccination, so that the return to school is safer.

This return to the classroom has not been without controversy in recent weeks, since the sind Labor unions of teachers have denounced that they fear for the safety of their members.

The CDC recommendation comes after a few days in which the government of President Joe Biden had been criticized for his inaction on the school reopening.

And this despite the fact that one of Joe Biden’s great priorities in his first 100 government days is the reopening of schools amid the coronavirus pandemic.
