COVID-19: Nearly 500 Los Angeles Unified School District Employees Fired for Failure to Get Vaccinated

Close to 500 workers of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) were fired this Tuesday for not complying with the ordinance to vaccinate against COVID- 19,

With 7 votes in favor and none against , the School Board decided to fire 496 employees who did not comply with the mandate to be vaccinated against the coronavirus. Presumably, most of the sick leave workers had been on leave since mid-October, when they should have received at least their first dose .

The LAUSD mandate stated that its workers should receive their second vaccination before 15 of November.

Los Unified School District Angeles had reported shortly after the first dose deadline that approximately 97 % of its workers had complied with the provision or had their position respected by extending a medical or religious exemption, which left more than 2, 200 employees were not vaccinated.

This Tuesday, LAUSD reported that nearly 99% of its tr workers chose to get vaccinated , and that 496 employees had been fired for not following the mandate to get vaccinated.

“Separating yourself from people who choose not to get vaccinated is an extremely difficult, but necessary to ensure the safety of all in our school communities. We wish everyone the best in their future endeavors and encourage everyone to get vaccinated, ”LAUSD Acting Superintendent Megan Reilly said in a statement.

The local teachers union endorsed LAUSD’s vaccination requirements for its workers.

The district did not detail how many of its laid off employees were classroom teachers .

Clarified that laid-off workers who subsequently decide to be vaccinated may be eligible to be rehired.
