In southern California 34 cases of the new strain of coronavirus, according to reports from the state governor GavinNewsom, who anticipated that “there will be others to be identified.”

San Diego County reported on 32 cases of the new virus variant, to the that they have named B.1.1.7; while San Bernardino County has reported 2 other cases so far.

In Los Angeles County, the epicenter of the pandemic at the state level, no Cases of the new mutation have been identified. What was disclosed is that the cases found are more than 100 miles from the Los Angeles city.

In the case of San Diego, all positives correspond to tests that were taken in the last week of December.

In view of this, the health spokesman for said county José Álvarez, reported that “of the total of 32 in the region, 16 affected men and 16 to women ”.

He highlighted that“ no related deaths have been reported with the variant, but that a woman infected with that strain had to be hospitalized ”. The patient is now recovering at home.

The new form of the virus attacks people of all ages equally. Of the confirmed infections in San Diego, “the four youngest cases were found in less than 10 years and the [caso] in the oldest person was found in a greater than 70 years. The average age of the cases infected with this variant was 36 years ”according to the spokesperson.

The San Diego health official Wilma Wooten observed in a conference that none of the cases recorded so far in that area has a “travel history.”

It means that none of them were infected abroad or in other states, but within the county of San Diego itself.

The authorities confirmed that one of the cases was found in Otay Mesa and they mentioned having also found another in Chula Vista. The two locations border Mexico.

“The fact that these cases have been identified in multiple places in the region shows that this strain of the virus could spread rapidly, ”said Wilma Wooten.

How did it all start? The new strain, which was initially detected in south-east England in September, has now been found in just three months in 34 countries, including the United States, where has already been reported in five states: Colorado, Florida, New York, Georgia, and California.

Health authorities in Colorado identified the first public case on 28 December 2020, in a National Guard soldier.

The CDC reported that this month it will launch a surveillance program in which it will receive samples of all the two.

While Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases – recognized as the highest authority on the subject- indicated that the new strain “is able to bind better to cell receptors and therefore, it is transmitted better”, hence it is more easily spread.

The recommendations regarding this new modality consist, according to the CDC, in being more insistent in washing hands and having antibacterial gel within reach; In addition to wearing a mask, maintain adequate distance and avoid meetings and crowds.
