Procter & Gamble has recalled more than a dozen Old Spice and Secret brand deodorants and aerosol sprays, warning that the products could contain benzene, a carcinogen.
The recall notice was published earlier this week and notes that the affected products probably would not expose people to levels of benzene high enough to cause health problems .
So far the company has not “received any reports of adverse events”, however it has ordered the recall of its products as a precaution.
To do
P&G requires people who purchased affected products that were sold in U.S. stores, as well as online, to throw them away, and the company is offering full refunds . For its part, the company has asked retailers to remove the products from the shelves .
To validate the refund, customers must fill out an online form or contact a hotline at 888 – 339 – 7689 from Monday to Friday from 9 to 18 hours, Eastern time.
The recall includes the following products with an expiration date before September 2023:
- Old Spice High Endurance AP Spray Pure Sport
- Old Spice Hardest Working Collection Invisible Spray Stronger Swagger

This is not the first benzene-related product recall. In July, Johnson & Johnson recalled some spray sunscreens from Neutrogena and Aveeno after detecting low levels of the carcinogen in the products.
According to the FDA, exposure to benzene “can occur by inhalation, orally and through the skin, and can lead to some types of cancer such as leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow , as well as blood disorders that can be life-threatening, ”states the FDA on its website.
