President Joe Biden will restrict travel from South Africa and seven other African countries starting Monday , in the face of a new variant of the coronavirus called Omicron by the World Health Organization, administration officials told CNN.
Following the advice of Dr. Anthony Fauci and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Biden administration will restrict travel from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique and Malawi .
Officials, who are still getting more information on the variant, said the policy was implemented as a precaution, given that the World Health Organization has now identified this as a variant of concern.
“Our scientists and civil servants The public health authorities are working quickly to learn more about this variant, ”said one official.
This does not apply to US citizens or legal permanent residents. As with all international travelers, they must still test negative before traveling.
