Between one scandal and another, the famous Turkish chef Nusret Gökçe known as Salt Bae, continues to speak for things that might seem to be trivial like the way you ask your employees to wash the dishes ; others like the low salary offered to a chef ; and on more serious issues, the lawsuits that former employees have filed for discrimination.
On his Instagram, Salt Bae posted a video where he instructs the staff of cooking in one of his Nusr-et restaurants, how to wash dishes properly until they are clean and shiny. What draws the attention of the users is that the Turkish technique seems very dedicated and exaggeratedly “romantic”.
To present his class, Nusret points out: “In business you have to know all the details … from A to Z”. His way of getting the dishes clean is slow and sensual. Rub the plate before rinsing it under the tap, then gently pat it once more with the kitchen towel and after some juggling, he shows the gleaming plate. At the end the workers cheer the chef.
Probably, many employees with piles of dirty dishes accumulated, would hardly replicate the laborious technique of Salt Bae.
Clean dishes, low pay and discrimination demands
The Nusr-et restaurants that are located in different parts of the world, from Istanbul, Dubai and London, to New York and Miami, have been the subject of controversy for their inflated prices, where a steak can cost $ 1000 . Some critics have pointed out that the price would not be commensurate with the food and services provided. Earlier this month it was announced that Salt Bae was hiring chefs for his Nusr-Et restaurant in London with a salary of 12 euros per hour plus tips (close to 14 Dollars). A pay that is compared to the cost of mashed potatoes in the place, while a Golden Giant Tomahawk steak exceeds a thousand euros.
Recently, Salt Bae’s company received a new discrimination lawsuit , this time from a Hispanic woman and man who worked at the restaurant Nusr-et Steakhouse New York . Both assure that they were subjects of actions that were not employed with Turkish co-workers.
Among the accusations, a Peruvian waiter points to the allocation of less lucrative, retirement of tips and abuse. For her part, the waitress of Dominican origin reports having been sexualized and was told to change her uniform for “a short skirt, high heels and a revealing blouse ”.
