Russia accused the United States of trying to draw new dividing lines between countries with the Virtual Summit for Democracy convened by the US President, Joe Biden , for the next 9 days and 11 December.

“We certainly have a negative attitude towards that event. It is nothing more than an attempt to draw new dividing lines, “said Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov at his daily telephone press conference.

The US president invited to the virtual summit about 110 countries, including neither Russia nor China.

Peskov recalled that at the beginning of the past years 90 Moscow and Washington fought to “reduce and eliminate these dividing lines.”

“Now, unfortunately, the United States prefers to create a new dividing line and divide countries into good and bad, according to its criteria,” he stressed.

He accused the US of trying to “privatize the word ‘democracy’” , to add that for Washington democracy is only what fits its understanding of this.

“It is clear that this should not and cannot be like that,” stressed the spokesman for the Russian Presidency.

He added that this American approach does not correspond to feelings and spirits there is the world , since “more and more countries prefer to decide for themselves how to live.”

December’s summit will be the first of two on democracy to be held by Biden with the stated goal of achieving “democratic renewal” through advocacy against the authoritarianism, the fight against corruption or respect for human rights.
