The parliamentary committee investigating the assault on the United States Capitol by part of supporters of former President Donald Trump last January quoted controversial Republican strategist Roger Stone and far-right broadcaster and conspirator Alex Jones to testify.
The summons to Jones and Stone were issued alongside those of three other people – the activist Duston Stockton and his wife, Jennifer Lawrence, as well as Trump collaborator Taylor Budowich-, and are following those filed in recent weeks against some 20 individuals, some very close to the former president.
On January 6, Stone participated in the march that ended the assault on the Capitol and was escorted by members of the far-right militia from Oath Keepers.
Jones, for his part, helped to hear win the protest that led to the assault on the Capitol and spoke at an event near the White House the night before.
“We need to know who organized , planned, paid and received the funds related to those events, as well as what the organizers communicated to the officials of the White House and Congress, ”said in a statement the chairman of the committee organizing the assault, Democratic Congressman Bennie Thompson.
This commission of inquiry is made up of a majority of Democratic congressmen and only two Republicans – Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger – who are at odds with Trump and in practice sections of the party.
Among those mentioned in the last weeks on the committee are former Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows, as well as his former adviser and far-right leader Steve Bannon .
Although many have refused to cu In compliance with the subpoenas, Bannon is the only one who has so far been declared by the Lower House in contempt and charged by the Justice.
The committee He has also asked the White House to hand over the documents on the activities and conversations of the former president on the day of the assault, but Trump has so far managed to block this request in court.
Stone has had previous problems with the Justice. In 2019 was sentenced to 40 months in prison for various crimes linked to the investigation into the Russian plot promoted by special counsel Robert Mueller, but Trump pardoned him days before he had to enter prison.
