The Temporary Visitor Driver’s License (TVDL) is a document that is issued in Illinois and is intended for undocumented immigrants . It is a credential that grants some privileges to drive legally in the state and that is equivalent to other similar forms, such as the AB 60 that is granted in the state of California .
As it is a driving license for a sector of the population, the State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) issues it with a particular design that makes it clearly identifiable and differs from the design used in standard driver’s licenses . According to the law that supports its existence, it lasts for three years and it is necessary for the bearer to commit to renew it when there are 90 days left for expiration.
According to DMV requirements, people interested in obtaining this type of credential must have some documents to be able to prove : name and date of birth, signature, current address, residence and name change (in cases of marriages). In addition to these documents, individuals must have at least 12 months living in the state.
Once all the basic requirements are met, the Applicant must follow the following steps :
1. Make an appointment at a local DMV office, through the official website of this agency or by calling the toll-free number 855 – 236-1155.
2. On the day of the appointment, submit all the necessary documentation.
3. Complete the corresponding application form and sign it when necessary.
4. Pay the corresponding fee for the procedure.
5. Allow the DMV employee who is receiving the documentation to take a photo and fingerprints.
6. Pass the vision test.
7. Pass the written exam, a knowledge test with questions based on the driver’s manual .
8. Pass the road test, a driving test in the company of a DMV evaluator .
After the application process, within 15 to 20 days, DMV sends the resulting credential to the address that the applicant currently owns . When the application is rejected, the DMV sends an explanatory letter. For a license of this type to be valid, its holder must contract the services of an insurer, buying an insurance policy that covers the financial responsibility corresponding to the vehicle.
