A fugitive who was wanted for rape and murder in the state of California, died Friday night in an exchange of gunfire with elements of the United States Marshals Service .
The federal agency did not disclose the identity of the fugitive, but reported that the man had a warrant in California for violation of probation in a violent assault and rape case .
The individual was also wanted in the city of Los Angeles in connection with murder that occurred earlier this i s.
Due to the shooting, Phoenix authorities closed several freeways near Sky Harbor International Airport to traffic.
When officers attempted to arrest him, the suspect drew a pistol and fired several times with the authorities .
The members of the working group of the United States Marshals returned fire, wounding the attacker , who died moments later from the gunfire.
There were no more injuries due to the shooting.
Neither federal authorities nor those of Phoenix offered more information in relation to this case.
