VIDEO: More than 40 dead and thousands affected by floods in India and Sri Lanka

Up to now, 41 people have died as a result of the heavy rains and floods that have hit Sri Lanka and southeastern India during the last days. The authorities also indicated that agricultural fields have been destroyed as a result of the large amounts of water, which will affect the local economy in the near future.
The northeast Indian monsoon is an annual phenomenon that leaves heavy rains from the Bay of Bengal to the southeast of the country connecting late autumn with the beginning of winter in the region. Every year it leaves significant floods and affects thousands of people .
Several areas of the southern province of Sabaragamuwa, prone to floods and landslides, have been blocked and flooded since last Monday because of the rains, Nushan Sanjeewa, a resident of this region, told Efe.
“ We were concerned because it rained for two days in a row before the floods . It was difficult for us to go to work because the roads were blocked, ”he said, adding that the stores along the roads were also under water.
“We expect thunderstorms and showers in some areas of the country. The highest precipitation occurred in the Northern Province during the last 24 hours , “the Department’s meteorologist told EFE today of Sri Lankan Meteorology Preethika Jayakod.
