VIDEO: More than 40 dead and thousands affected by floods in India and Sri Lanka

Up to now, 41 people have died as a result of the heavy rains and floods that have hit Sri Lanka and southeastern India during the last days. According to the Sri Lanka Disaster Management Center (DMC), in the country at least 26 people died and more than 200, 000 were affected by rainfall during the last two weeks , mostly due to landslides and drownings .

Among the victims are three members of the same family who died this week when a landslide occurred in the Dambulla sector, in the Central province of the country. The deceased were a mother of 27 years old, his 8 year old daughter and his niece of 13 years.

The northeast Indian monsoon is an annual phenomenon that leaves heavy rains from the Bay of Bengal to the southeast of the country connecting late autumn with the beginning of winter in the region. Every year it leaves significant floods and affects thousands of people .
