A first grade teacher from the Atlanta area who traveled to Mexico on vacation last month was found dead on the side of the highway in Guadalajara , 1 0 days after the last time she was seen, which led to the arrest of her boyfriend.

The body of Alexandra Morales, of 24 years, which taught at Benefield Elementary School in Lawrenceville, Georgia , was discovered on November 9 inside a rental car.

Morales was last seen on 30 October, when she attended a concert by the band Coveted in the Telmex Arena in Zapopan, five miles outside of Guadalajara, Jalisco.

Later, the Mexican authorities arrested Morales’ boyfriend, Fidel Barragán , of 28 years, under the charge of aggravated disappearance, but local law enforcement did not rule out filing more serious charges, including the murder.

Barragán is scheduled to make his first court appearance in Mexico no later than Friday.

In an interview for Telemundo Atlanta, Morales’s uncle, Ostin Cuenca, said that Barragán’s arrest is just the beginning and that others may have played a role in his death.

He urged the United States authorities to follow up on his niece’s case to ensure justice is served.

Cuenca said that after Morales attended the concert of 30 October, her family tried to call her, but they cut off her phone.

Morales was formally reported missing by members of her family on November 5.

Morales’s father and one of his brothers traveled to Mexico to transport her body back to the United States for burial.

Benefield Elementary School principal Shonda Gipson-Stevens told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that Morales had taken personal leave in October, but did not return to her classroom last week as planned.

She was hired to teach first grade at 2019 after graduating from Georgia State University.

After learning of Morales’ death, Gipson-Stevens sent a letter to the parents, sharing the tragic news with them.

“We know that this loss affects many in our school community and we want to support our students and members staff during this difficult time, ”wrote Gipson-Stevens.

eros are here to listen, speak, help with questions and help with the emotions that accompany this type of loss.
