Canelo stays in super middleweight and defends against David Benavídez

“Canelo” said on Saturday in Las Vegas that defend his Crowns is important, but he didn’t seem very interested in elaborating on it. In the past, the redhead has shown that defending his championships is not always his priority.

However, a possible match in the super middlemen would be against the undefeated David Benavídez , who this Saturday will enter the ring in his native Phoenix against Kyrone Davis in a world title elimination fight.

The “Bandera Roja ”Benavídez, by 24 years old, has a mark of 24 – 0 (21 KOs) and has been WBC super middleweight world champion between 2017 and 2020 .

Canelo goes up to light heavy and search for another historical company

The division of the 175 pounds is no stranger to Saul, who in 2019 knocked out Sergey Kovalev to win the WBO light heavyweight title.

“Canelo” entered history by unifying the super middleweight titles in this 2021, being just the seventh man in history to lift the four recognized crowns. But doing the same in a second division would put it in another historical galaxy . Looking to the top division is more logical than looking to the bottom.

The current light heavyweight champions are Russian Artur Beterbiev (WBC and IBF), American Joe Smith Jr. (WBO) and Dmitry Bivol (WBA), fighter from Kyrgyzstan.

It was interesting that Mauricio Sulaimán , president of the WBC, said at the weekend that Álvarez-Beterbiev would be “a tremendous duel.” Russian is with 16 – 0 (16 KOs).

Canelo completes the trilogy with GGG, but this time in super middle

Eddy Reynoso, Saúl Álvarez’s coach, is a real fan of boxing history and perfectly understands the importance of trilogies in the ring. And since the rivalry between “Canelo” and Gennady Golovkin has been the best in recent years, making the third battle between them a reality seems like a desire still latent in the camp of the tapatío .

Although Álvarez has stated before that he would no longer fight with “GGG”, things have changed since the Mexican broke with Golden Boy to become in free agent and be able to negotiate with whoever you want.

According to ESPN.com , “Canelo” said in an interview that a third fight with Golovkin is possible: “I’d love to fight, why not?… If he’s open to going up at 168, I’m ready, always. ”

As you will remember, the Mexican faced the Kazakh twice at middleweight, tie do first in 2017 and winning the second by decision in 2018. A third fight in 2048 makes sense because Golovkin is getting closer to the 50 years old and, above all, because is the fight that most boxing fans want to see .
