Heinz is confident that in the not-so-distant future there will be human explorers on Mars. The food brand also advances with research and reveals that it wants to be present in future generations. He just released a “Marz Edition” sauce, made with tomatoes that are grown in the same harsh conditions found on Mars.

Marz Edition sauce is a condiment made in collaboration with a team of 14 astrobiologists from the Aldrin Space Institute of the Florida Institute of Technology. It is the product of two years of research.

The team of researchers dedicated more than 2000 hours first to a pilot study of 30 plants, then the largest effort involved around 450 tomato plants in cubes individual.

Tomatoes were grown on Earth, recreating similar soil, temperature and water conditions to those found on the Red Planet.

“From analyzing the soil for Martian conditions two years ago to harvesting now, it has been a journey that has proven wherever we end up, the sauce Heinz Tomato Ketchup will continue to be enjoyed for generations to come , ”said Cristina Kenz, Director of Growth at Kraft Heinz International Zone.

The Marz Edition tomato sauce batch was presented in Heinz headquarters in Pittsburgh, where the experimental sauce passed the company’s quality tests for certification of Heinz tomato sauce. At the moment it is not available for purchase.

Researchers point out that the work with Heinz allows them to see what the possibilities for long-term food production beyond Earth.

“Until now, most efforts to discover ways to grow in conditions simulated by Mars are short-term plant growth studies. What this project has done is analyze long-term food collection. Achieving a quality harvest to become HEINZ Tomato Ketchup was the dream result and we achieved it ”, he said Dr Andrew Palmer, Aldrin Space Institute.

Independent of the project to grow tomatoes under similar conditions Krafr aims to use tomatoes Heinz Ketchup sourced 100% sustainable for 2025.
