LAS VEGAS – The embarrassing homophobic guy scream and undoubtedly discriminatory that for years has been heard in Mexican soccer matches has made its unfortunate appearance in boxing , when heard during the weigh-in ceremony of the fight between Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez and Caleb Plant .
Moments before both world super middleweight champions stepped onto the scale Friday in the arena at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, a sector of the public present began to generate those expressions that have done so much damage to soccer in Mexico and that constitute all an international shame.
After the third time the expression was heard, the President of the World Boxing Council, Mauricio Sulaimán, asked the fans not to do it . After that no more was heard.
Both fighters gave the regulation weight (Canelo gave exactly the limit of the 168 pounds) and the latest threats were released and now everything is set for Saturday’s fight. But it cannot be ruled out that the famous scream will return, which would be an embarrassment.
This is Canelo Álvarez’s first fight in Las Vegas since November 2019 , when he knocked out Sergey Kovalev. Then the pandemic would begin.
