Mexicans invade Concacaf: Luis Fernando Tena was announced as the new coach of Guatemala

The Mexican coach Luis Fernando Tena , Olympic champion with Mexico in London 2012, was announced this Friday as the new coach of Guatemala officially by the local federation.

Tena, from 63 years old, will take the reins of his second national team, after his successful stint with the Mexican sub team 23, Come in 2011 and 2013, when he won gold at Pan American Games (2011) and in the Olympic Games (2012), plus a short step also in 2013 for the Mexican absolute combined.

The Guatemala Football Federation confirmed in a statement the appointment of Tena, who “will be directly in charge of the conduction, management and preparation” is the largest selection “in addition to the work and advice that will be carried out with the different processes of youth teams ”from the Central American country.

The official presentation will be “in the next few days” through a press conference still without an established date, specified the sports authorities.

The new Guatemalan coach replaces the Mexican Rafael Loredo , who on an interim basis led Guatemala in this year’s Gold Cup, with losses to El Salvador and Mexico , plus a draw against Trinidad and Tobago.

Loredo was internally in the position after in the first semester of the year Guatemala dismissed the previous coach, Amarini Villatoro , after being out of the Qatar World Cup qualifier 2022.

Tena began his stage on the benches as coach of Cruz Azul in 1994 , a team to which he has returned in three different moments and with which he won a local championship and three trophies of the Confederation of North America, Central America and the Caribbean Football (Concacaf) in 1996, 1997 and 2014.

In addition, he won another title in the Mexican league with Morelia, the only one in its history, in the year 2000.

The coach has directed a dozen teams of the Liga MX , among which three of those considered “great” stand out: Cruz Azul, America and Guadalajara . In addition, he has headed the projects of Tecos, Morelia, Santos Laguna, Chiapas, León, Querétaro and Juárez , his last job.

Precisely in Juárez he stayed just eleven days of the last tournament ( Guardians 2021), when the team was plunged into the sixteenth position of 18 clubs.

As a player, he served as a midfielder in the teams Atlético Español, Oaxtepec, Guadalajara and Atlante , between and 1976.

Tena will have as its main objective to bring Guatemala to the first World Cup in absolute category in its history , since it has only participated in a World Cup but in lower divisions, specifically Colombia 2011 in sub category 20.
