Hurricane Sam will cause heavy rain in Bermuda and dangerous storm surge in Puerto Rico

Hurricane Sam, whose winds rose to 240 km, will pass this Friday over Atlantic waters east of the Bermuda Islands, where its displacement will produce tropical storm conditions starting tonight, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported. In addition, it is expected to cause heavy swells in Puerto Rico before passing near the East coast this weekend.

Sam, a powerful Category 4 hurricane

that has moved since its formation only over open water , was this Friday morning at 700 km south-southeast of Bermuda and moving to 28 km / h in a north-northwest direction.

The Bermuda Islands are under a tropical storm warning, which means that the corresponding meteorological conditions are expected in a period of 36 hours.

The NHC expects Sam make a turn to the north in the next few hours and then to the northeast at a travel speed similar to the current , to turn northeast from Saturday .

Although is forecast to weaken in the next days , it will continue to be an intense hurricane until at least Saturday night.

The swells generated by Sam will impact the northern tip of the Leeward Islands and the Greater Antilles, including Puerto Rico , for the next few days.

The storm surge is expected to reach Bermuda and the Bahamas today and then spread to the East Coast of the United States and the Canadian Atlantic for this weekend .

A two months until the end of the Atlantic hurricane season (30 November) there is only one unused name (Wanda) left on the list for 2021, which is being a year more active in cyclones than normal.

Twenty tropical storms have formed so far this year, of which seven have reached hurricanes: Elsa, Grace, Henri, Ida, Larry, Nicholas and Sam.

From them Grace, Ida, Larry and Sam reached the highest category, 3 or more on the scale Saffir-Simpson.
